We are team of enthusiasts that fell in love with 2004's "A Century of Flight" and have been enjoying the simming experience ever since.
Since the beginning, modifying and expanding the flight simulator world was a central part of the experience. Adding modules, creating our own and even building a dedicated "flight simulator" computer, complete with triple screens, yolk, pedals and custom switch panels which would later be used as a training device in the local flight school.
Over time, life and a lack of a new iteration of Microsoft's Flight Simulator, saw our enthusiasm simmer. While other projects and hobbies took our attention, simming was never forgotten, nor ignored. The skills and experience gained from simming became the catalyst for many other projects that were to come. Now, with the newest iteration of Microsoft Flight Simulator, We are excited to bring the accumulated skills and experience back to the forefront.

When we think about the average Flight Sim flier, an image of a computer desk full of peripherals with a large custom PC beside it come to mind. It’s always been true that the best sim experience required a lot of computing horsepower, and that hasn't really changed. However technology has advanced to the point where this may not necessarily be true for long. With the plan to bring Microsoft Flight Simulator to the XBOX, our idea of the average Flight Sim flier may need to change, and our assumptions for what they are going to want may have to change as well.
Today, the gaming market is saturated with high action, story driven content that is designed to be consumed in bite sized packages. This is everything that MSFS is not, and that got us to wondering. Could it be? The Microsoft Flight Simulator series' greatest strength over the years was that if there was an area that wasn't enough for you, you could take the time to make it so. With this in mind, we came up with our direction.

We've decided to focus on creating exciting, story driven content that will not only give the users beautiful scenery to fly through, but clear purpose and progression as well. We feel that this route will not only satisfy legacy simmers by giving them an add-on they are familiar with, upgraded scenery, but also new simmers by giving them the exciting, story driven content that they are familiar with.

The Kerguelen Islands are a beautiful, rugged, windswept landscape full of mountains, Islets and inlets and they represent some of the most remote locations on earth. We at Remote Air thought that this made the location perfect for our first project with Microsoft Flight Simulator.
Our goal is to create story driven, fictional content that the user can enjoy, not only as intended, but also give them access to locations that they ordinarily wouldn’t have, so they can explore it as they like on their own. The Kerguelen Islands are, in reality, only accessible by ship. The only aviation is by ship helicopter, so there are naturally no air strips or airports. This gives us a unique opportunity to build a believable, but fictional network of locations and airstrips that open up the beauty of the Islands and provides the basis for the stories which will come as the SDK technology becomes available.

Kerguelen: The Desolation Islands
While the airstrips and airports are fictional, as much as research allowed, the names, positions and lore of a number of locations are based on historical fact.
3 of the airstrips and one airport have already been completed, with the remainder in the coming months. The Stories will come after that, to be implemented when the SDK allows.
Aside from the stories, We have put a lot of focus on bringing out the natural ruggedness of the terrain. The weather often has low visibility and coupled with a low cloud ceiling allows the enhancement of mountain ridge lines to really bring out a great effect. Our locations include all the elements that you would expect in these remote locations, such as, water treatment, sewer, power and access to logistic networks.

The Kerguelen Islands are also called The Desolation Islands, and there is a very good reason for this. The high average wind speed means anything taller than a shrub gets blown away. The Beautiful landscape has but a single tree which only grows as tall as the buildings that shelter it. The isolated location, windswept rock and the dreary weather would make anyone describe it as desolate.
Aviation in the Desolation Islands could only be called extreme. The high wind speeds, remote, rocky locations, low visibility coupled with weather that can change quickly will make every take-off and landing something to remember. There will absolutely be days that ticking off the “real world weather” will be the only way you can fly, but the days you can, you'll be rewarded with some of the most beautiful and challenging flying available in MSFS.
There are tentatively 8 airstrips and 2 airports planned with countless POIs. The Stories will be told from the perspective of an Aviation business that serves remote locations.
